This book centres around Macy Lockhart, a typical 17 year old girl who has just found out her boyfriend has been cheating on her! So she sets out to do what any girl in that situation would, destroy everything he has ever touched in her bedroom and leave it in a heap for him to find!
After a mysterious necklace turns up on her doorstep Macy is confused, it couldn't be from her cheating ex, so who is it from? Memories start flooding back to Macy, and finally she remembers. She is a Keeper, she is reborn time and time again in order to play a vital role in the history books.
This time however things are different, instead of taking on her new job in the body of Macy Lockhart, she is transported back to a previous life when she was Charmain, a life long friend and handmaiden to Cleopatra in ancient Egypt. For a moment she forgets why she is really there and lets herself fall in love all over again with Hasami her fiancé at the time, and spend time with her old friend Cleopatra.
But things are not always as they seem, lies and deceit are intertwined with previous life and Charmain must restore the rightful order of history. This means letting Hasami go to his death.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book although it is not my typical choice of reads. Having very little knowledge of ancient Egypt (except of course what I was taught in primary school - which basically consisted of Egyptians build the pyramids and worshipped cats!), I felt I came away from this book with a better understanding of the time. Don't get me wrong it is nothing like a history textbook, and of course it is fictional! Courtney Cole manages to paint a story of the scene, allowing the reader to slip into the background and soak up what is happening between the characters.
The ending of the book leave us with hope, (for me that hope is of a sequel as I'm nosy and want to find out what happens to Macy next), but also hope that there is a soulmate out there for everyone!
