Guardian Giveaway!

I have a new giveaway for all my lovely followers!

Beautiful vampire Anna, is entangled in a social conflict between human and vampire races. The Vampire Infection they'd thought could uncover medical miracles has spread out into the city.

Carrier Vampires who can infect people with the blood lust disease have been detained in an attempt to halt the spread. Non-carriers have been left to normal lives, treated with sedating medication. But there were still too many accidents, it's been decided by Alicorp to assign human protectors - mandated by law.

These protectors are know as....Guardians.

Anna falls in love with her guardian, a man who wants to find a cure, but the more she learns about him and his association with Alicorp the harder she finds it to trust him.

Blogger Interview: Siobhán

The Basics

Name: Siobhán

Age: 24

Location: Scotland, UK

Blog(s) URL(s): http://lovefantasyscifinovels.blogspot.com/
http://thoughtsofamadhatter.blogspot.com/

Wow, we are the same age and from the same city! Not often that happens online!

How long have you been book blogging for: I started up my blog in October 2010. However, my first post wasn't until November 2010.

What types of books to you blog about: I have two blogs. My Love Fantasy Blog is for all my fantasy and sci-fi reviews and my Mad Hatter is for mainly YA fiction with some adult for time to time.

The Main Questions

What made you start a book blog?
I decided to start blogging after running my facebook page. Love Fantasy Novels. I wanted to have a fun blog to host my reviews on and if people wanted to join and follow me they could. But I started blogging for myself as a way to keep track of my books and reviews.

How did you come up with the name for the blog(s)?
My first blog was very simple. I love reading Fantasy novels and I had just started to love Sci-Fi novels. So why not just put it all together lol. Thoughts of a Mad Hatter! came about from a contest I ran. I wanted a new blog and couldn't decide on a name so I ran a small contest and people suggested a name and I picked Thoughts of a Mad Hatter out the entries.

What does being a book blogger mean to you?
Being a book blogger means alot to me. I love sharing my thoughts on books with other and its a fun past time even though its a lot of hard work.

How does book blogging fit in with in with the other parts of your life?
Well, I'm a stay at home mum so other than the nursery run and house work blogging fits just perfectly in my life at the moment. It will all change when my son starts school in August as I will hopefully starting back at work. So as of right now I try getting online for a few hours in the morning and at night when my son goes to bed. The inbetween is me cleaning and reading.

What author would you love to host an Author Interview with?
I don't think I could choice just one. I have four authors I would give an arm and a leg to interview. J.K Rowling, having grown up on Harry Potter they are my favourite books ever. So I would love to interview her. Anne Rice, who started my obsession with Vampires when I was 11 and I got the Vampire Chronicles from the Library. I just love Anne Rice. Stephenie Meyer, yes I am a twilight Freak! And I am proud. I was never a reader growing they only books I really enjoyed reading where the book mention above. I read the Twilight Saga back in 2009 and haven't stop since. And Last but not Least SImone Elkeles. She is the reason why I am now addicted YA Fiction/Contemporary. After reading her Perfect Chemistry novel I decided to branch out into more genres.

All About You

What do you enjoy doing in your free time (and you can’t say reading or blogging!)? Watching DVDs. My 2nd addiction (1st being books) is DVD boxsets. I love going to bed and chilling with my dvds once my son is sleeping. I also love listening (and trying to sing) music. I listen to almost anything. I used to love drawing but I haven't did it for a while. However, I don't really get much free time so usually I am goofing around acting silly with my 4 year old son lol.

Name your three favourite book genres?
Oh thats so hard. Only 3? mmmmmmm.........I change my mind all the time. Right now though my favourite genres are Paranormal, YA Contemporary and YA Dystopia. I have always been interested in the Paranormal its just a great ecapisism. YA Contemporary and YA Dystopia are two quite recent genres to me and I am really enjoying the books I have read in these genres.

Are there any book genres that you refuse to read?
Erotica. I really don't like it all at. Don't get me wrong I like a hot steamy novel as much as the next woman but I don't like it on every single page. It really puts me off.

What upcoming book releases are you most looking forward to any why?
Oh god. You serious? Do you have a year free to let me ramble on about the books I am looking forward to ? Ok let me try and narrow it down to a few lol. Well first I am super excited to Bite Club and Last Breath by Rachel Caine. Books 10 and 11 in the Morganville Vampires Series. I just love this series. Its hot, fun and super wicked. Rachel Caine is a wonderful author can't wait for these books. Forever by Maggie Stiefvater. I really liked the first two books in the trilogy and looking forward to the last book. em... Oh The Hidden by Jessica Verday. Books 1 and 2 in The Hollow Trilogy where in my favourites reads of 2010 so I really can't wait for that. I really could go on and on and on but I won't Lol.

What are you reading at the moment?
Last night I start Audrey, Wait! by Robin Benway. I got it from the library having heard so much good things about it. I am really enjoying it so far. And as of 5 minutes ago (post man has just been) I am going to start A bloody London Sunset by Jaz Primo as soon as I get off the computer. **Does Happy Dance**

Author Interview: Courtney Cole

Today I have a brilliant treat for my followers, an author interview with Courtney Cole.

Hi Courtney, and thanks for stopping by the blog for an interview!

First of all tell us a bit about yourself?
Hi! Thanks for allowing me to be here.
I was born and raised in Kansas—which is right smack in the middle of the US. It’s the home of very friendly people and the worst weather on the planet. Since summers were so hot, I spent most of my summer days reading stacks of books. When I didn’t like how one ended, I just wrote my own. And that’s how I discovered that I was a writer.

I graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University with a Bachelor’s degree in Business. But I’ve never managed to like working in the corporate world half as much as I love writing.

Your debut novel, Every Last Kiss hasn’t long been released. How do you feel about seeing it out in the world?
Oh, gosh. It’s terrifying. I am a very calm person, but when I saw that it was live on Amazon, I almost had a panic attack. Just knowing it was out there in the world for people to love... or hate was really scary. But I’m getting used to it.

How long did it take you to write Every Last Kiss?
I think it took me around five months or so... but a good chunk of that time was spent researching. A lot.

The book is set mainly in ancient Egypt, what made you use that setting?
I’ve always been fascinated with ancient Egyptian culture. But one day, when I was thinking about random nothingness (no, that’s probably not a word, but I like it anyway), I started thinking about fate. And then I started thinking about the people who had tragic lives that would probably change their fate if they could. And that’s how I arrived at Cleopatra.

What kind of research was involved for the historical side for the book?
A lot of it. Hours and hours of devouring everything about Cleopatra that I could get my hands on. I think I know everything there is to know about her at this point...

What was the inspiration behind the character of Macy Lockhart/Charmian?
Well, I knew that I needed a modern element so that I could hold my readers attention. So, I thought.... You know what would be interesting ? If someone from the present was dropped into ancient Egypt. And that’s how the idea for Macy came about.

How did you come up with the idea of The Order of Moirae?
I dug into mythology a bit. Another name for the Fates is the Moirae. So, I played with it and twisted the story of the Fates around just a little and came up with the Order of the Moirae.

Since the book is called Every Last Kiss (The Bloodline saga) I’m asuming there is going to be a sequel? Please say there is- you can’t leave us with that ending!
There is definitely going to be a sequel. In fact, I’m working on it right now. But I can’t give you any hints....

What are you reading right now?
I just started Ethereal by Addison Moore. And so far, it’s really good. I was drawn to it because it is about angels- and my book, Guardian, which comes out in July is also about angels. And demons .

Do you have a favourite book that you read over and over again?
I’ve read ”The Five People you Meet in Heaven” by Mitch Albom probably a million times. I love that little book. And I love Mitch Albom. Everything he touches is magic.

Do you have any advice for budding authors out there that may be trying to get their work published?
Write what you want to write- don’t write what you think is hot right now. What’s hot right this second, probably won’t still be hot when you’re finished writing your book.

Thank you so much for your time today Courtney and I hope you stop by the blog again soon!
Thank you so much for having me. I’ll definitely be back soon!

I am currently hosting a giveaway for an e-copy of Every Last Kiss, want to be in with a chance of winning? Then head over to the giveaway page!

Review: Every Last Kiss Courtney Cole

4/5

This book centres around Macy Lockhart, a typical 17 year old girl who has just found out her boyfriend has been cheating on her! So she sets out to do what any girl in that situation would, destroy everything he has ever touched in her bedroom and leave it in a heap for him to find!

After a mysterious necklace turns up on her doorstep Macy is confused, it couldn't be from her cheating ex, so who is it from? Memories start flooding back to Macy, and finally she remembers. She is a Keeper, she is reborn time and time again in order to play a vital role in the history books.

This time however things are different, instead of taking on her new job in the body of Macy Lockhart, she is transported back to a previous life when she was Charmain, a life long friend and handmaiden to Cleopatra in ancient Egypt. For a moment she forgets why she is really there and lets herself fall in love all over again with Hasami her fiancé at the time, and spend time with her old friend Cleopatra.

But things are not always as they seem, lies and deceit are intertwined with previous life and Charmain must restore the rightful order of history. This means letting Hasami go to his death.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book although it is not my typical choice of reads. Having very little knowledge of ancient Egypt (except of course what I was taught in primary school - which basically consisted of Egyptians build the pyramids and worshipped cats!), I felt I came away from this book with a better understanding of the time. Don't get me wrong it is nothing like a history textbook, and of course it is fictional! Courtney Cole manages to paint a story of the scene, allowing the reader to slip into the background and soak up what is happening between the characters.

The ending of the book leave us with hope, (for me that hope is of a sequel as I'm nosy and want to find out what happens to Macy next), but also hope that there is a soulmate out there for everyone!

Review: Thorn Queen (Dark Swan #2) - Richelle Mead

5/5

This is the second book in the Dark Swan series by Richelle Mead.
I picked this up and started reading it straight after finishing Storm Born so the story was still fresh in my mind.

The book starts off right where we left Eugeine Markham in Storm Born, confused and still trying to balance her time between to worlds, two sets of friends and maybe even two lovers - if she wanted! Of course her mother and step-father know nothing about her being names a queen in the otherworld, and she would love to keep it that way!

Eugeine is struggling with her new-found identity as the Thorn Queen, also trying to come to grips with the fact she has a new found little sister, who is out there somewhere trying to get pregnant. And as if that wasn't enough to deal with her boyfriend is having a baby with another woman! Gosh could life get any more difficult or complicated for Eugeine? Of course it can! Richelle Mead weaves all these complicated details together and makes the reader genuinely feel concerned about a fictional character, and also makes a make unbelievable book world come to life in your head!

I found this book a bit more darker than Storm Born, both in the writing style and the sex scenes - I'm not complaining though! I thoroughly loved this book! I especially loved watching Eugeine grow into her new powers and start to fall in love (if only just a little) with the dark side and temptation.

I have ordered the third book in this series, Iron Crowned from the library and should hopefully get my hands on it next week! I am so excited to see what is going to happen next!

Review: Storm Born - Richelle Mead

5/5

To start with, I'm going to hold my hands up...I may be a bit bias when it comes to this review, as I absolutely love Richelle Mead's writing.

So with that disclaimer in place, lets get on to the real review...

This is the first book in the Dark Swan series, which I have to point out is a Adult book so of course there is going to be more sex, swearing and generally more graphic details than was in her YA series, Vampire Academy.

The story centres around Eugeine Markham, a powerful shaman who has been banishing demons, ghosts and all types of otherworldly creatures from our world since she was a teen. Nowadays, she charges for it. We've all got make a living some way, right?!

As the story unfolds Eugeine discovers that she is the child of rape, not only that but her real father was the Strom King, once the most feared and powerful rulers of one of the lands in the otherworld. This of course comes with a prophecy that the first grandchild of Storm King will bridge the gap between the two worlds and allow all types of creatures to cross over and live in the mortal world.

Tie this in with a couple of potential love interests, trying to live a regular life as well as earn money from banishing ghosts and you have a recipe for success!

Trying not to give too much away which is really difficult as there is just so much in this book to talk about! I really loved this book, Richelle Mead is able to paint a picture of the world around Eugeine (whichever one she happens to be in at the time!) and make the reader genuinely care about the characters.

Review: Ponies Kij Johnson

3/5

This was a very short story, I mean literately it will take you about two minutes to read it!

Although it is short, it is a really good and rather gruesome story about a girl who is trying to fit in with the "in crowd" and will do almost anything to become part of this circle of friends.

It is pretty thought provoking, and even after I had read it it left me thinking what would I have done in that kind of situation.

If you want to read Ponies for your self it can be found online here

I would love to know what you all think of it, so leave a comment below with your thoughts!

It's giveaway time! - Now Closed!

I have very kindly been given the opportunity to host a giveaway of a e-copy of Courtney Cole's début novel Every Last Kiss!

17-year old Macy Lockhart has the weight of the world on her shoulders.

For thousands of years, she has been a Keeper in the ancient organization, the Order of the Moirae. She literally holds fate in her hands.

But this is something that she forgets, because her memories are wiped clean when she is reborn each time, until it is time for her cycle to begin again in her seventeenth year in each life.

And for the last two thousand years, this has never been a problem. Until now. But now, fate is being challenged and to fix it, she is forced to return to a previous life, one where she was Cleopatra's handmaiden, Charmian.

Cue up the second problem: Unless she interferes with the fabric of time, the very thing she has returned to repair, then her soul mate, Hasani, will die leading Marc Antony's armies against Rome. Can she really stand aside and allow the love of her life to die all over again?

Every Last Kiss is a brand new novel by Courtney Cole, at the moment it is only available on electronic format, the book is due to be published in print on the 15th of May. I am giving my followers a chance to get a hold of an electronic copy before then!

All you have to do is be a blog follower (and yes I will be checking), and fill out the form, the link to is just below! Review: The Chosen One - Carol Lynch Williams

4/5

First off, this is a pretty short and quick read, I read it one sitting. Do not let that put you off, or make you think that it is just a piece of YA book fluff, it is not!

This book centres around Kyra, and it is told from her point of view. Kyra is 13 and lives in a polygamous community with her father, three mothers and twenty brothers and sisters. Kyra has a simple life, doing housework and helping to take care of the little ones. She has never questioned her religion or what she's been told before, but recently things have started to change, the new prophet has put up a fence around the compound, banned all books which are not the bible, imposed much stricter rules and recently Kyra has been sneaking books like Harry Potter from a mobile library into the compound.

Kyra is then chosen by the prophet to be married. Married to her sixty year old uncle that is. Despite her protests, and her fathers the wedding is to go ahead and preparations are made and a wedding dress sewn for Kyra.

Things get worse for Kyra, and she notices that she's being watched everywhere she goes, not only that she is already in love, with a boy her own age and wants to marry him one day, not her uncle.

Without giving away the ending, I can safely say this book really moved me and I found myself willing Kyra to get away from the prophet. This really is such a good book and I would recommend it to anyone!

Review: Lies (Gone #3) - Michael Grant

4/5

This is the 3rd book in the Gone series. I never really liked the second book, Hunger so much so I kept putting this book off for ages.

Turns out I really liked it, I thought it was much better than the previous two books. Sam actually seemed like a real person in this book, rather than some super human who was juggling no sleep and dealing with every tiny problem in the FAYZ like he was in the previous books.

I am looking forward to reading Plague, the 4th books now but I think I will wait until it comes into the library before reading it. I still don't love this series enough to go out any buy it!

Review: Sisters Red - Jackson Pearce

4/5

This book had a bit of a slow start for me.

Sisters bitching and moaning about each other, then regretting it and making up again. Typical teenage sibling stuff really, but when that is mixed with the wolf hunting, add in a bit of romance on the side and you get a great book!

I really liked this book, I loved the mix of the old German myths with the modern day world and how realistic this book actually was. Two teenage girls living alone and coping fine without jobs is something that strikes me as very odd. But when we see how bad they really are struggling, and the sisters have to sell their Grandmothers old things just to get by it really makes you stop and think if you could have coped in that kind of situation. I know I couldn't have!

I really liked the different take this book had on werewolves, especially since they can't turn just anyone it has to be a potential. I liked learning about the different wolf pacts, and a especially liked reading about the sisters killing them!

Review: Graceling - Kristen Cashore

4/5

I heard a lot of mixed reviews about this book, so I was a bit unsure about reading it at first, so instead of buying it I got it from the library.

Turns out I really liked it, the book is set in a completely different world, which makes it kind of hard to understand at first as there is a lot of talk about all the different lands. But thankfully there is a map in the book, which I kept having to look back at.

Katsa is a Graceling, under the command of her uncle she kills for him. Although Katsa starts feeling regret for what she's been doing and with the help of her new friend Po she stands up to her uncle and leaves the castle to do her own thing.

I don't want to give away to much of the main storyline, but I really enjoyed this book, and I loved the ending! I cannot wait to get my hands on the second book, Fire.

You Tube

My first You Tube video is finally live!

Updates....

Hi everyone!

Sorry for the severe lack of blog posts in the past couple of weeks. I have been super busy with uni, this is my last year and I've had to finish a 28,000 word dissertation!

It's all handed in now, and I am almost finished uni forever! Just one more exam later this week, an essay due in for May and a final presentation in May as well.

So I will be able to get back on here to update more often! YAY!

Some more good news is that I have just filmed my first book related You Tube video, and it's uploading as I type...apparently it will take 50 minutes to upload though :(

Review: City of Fallen Angels - Cassandra Clare

5/5

First off let me say I am a total Clary/Jace, Simon/Isabelle, Magnus/Alec fan, so of course the book captured me right away!

I did enjoy all the smaller story lines about the less major characters (to me that means anyone who isn't Jace or Clary) I am a bit annoyed however that there wasn't much of Magnus in this book, as I really love him!

Anyway, not much actually happens throughout the book, there was one point when I had 4 chapters left to go and thought to myself, nothing has actually really happened yet! Of course as soon as I thought that, something happened! After finishing the book and looking back there were clues everywhere in the book that something big was coming up!

I thought what more could Cassandra actually write about? Clary and Jace are finally together the Shadowhunters and the Downworlders are on the most part getting along with each other....how wrong I was! Although the majority of this book seemed like filler material to me but I liked that though, I liked seeing more of the characters and what their general everyday lives are like when there isn't some big evil brewing, or Valentine around the corner.

The ending did not really surprise or shock me, although I am a bit annoyed that we are left with a cliffhanger ending and have to wait a while for the next instalment to be released!

Review: Numbers - Rachel Ward

4/5

From the minute I opened this book I was hooked! It is written really well and I just could not put it down!

The story centres around Jem who has been in the care system in and around London from the age of 7 when her mother died of a drug overdose. That was the day she realised that the numbers that she's always seen is not normal and no one else sees them. Not only that she discovers what they mean, they are the date of death of the person she is looking at.

After becoming friends with Spider, one of the boys in her class at school. They both skip school and spend the day in London, and while waiting in the queue for the London eye Jem notices that everyone in line has the same date of death, today's date!

After the events at the London eye Jem and Spider are on the run from the police and are suspected terrorists! They become closer on their journey and Jem struggles with herself wondering if she should tell Spider the truth about her ability, and also is date of death which is becoming ever closer!

The ending of the book was pretty obvious and I could tell what was going to happen a mile off, really looking forward to the next book in the series though!

City of Fallen Angels....sneak peak!

For all those UK people who still have to wait another two days (like me!), before they can get their hands on a copy of City of Fallen Angels, here is a little sneak peak:

This is a letter from Jace to Clary that was published in the Barnes and Noble edition of City of Fallen Angels, enjoy!

Clary,

Despite everything, I can't bear the thought of this ring being lost forever, any more then I can bear the thought of leaving you forever. And though i have no choice about the one, at least I can choose about the other. Im leaving you our family ring because you have as much right to it as i do
I'm writing this watching the sun come up. You're asleep, dreams moving behind your restless eyelids. I wish i knew what you were thinking. I wish I could slip into your head and see the world the way you do. I wish I could see myself the way you do. But maybe I dont want to see that. Maybe It would make me feel even more than I already do that I'm perpetuating some kind of Great Lie on you, and I couldnt stand that.
I belong to you. You could do anything you wanted with me and i would let you. You could ask anything of me and I'd break myself trying to make you happy. My heart tells me this is the best and greatest feeling i have ever had. But my mind knows the difference between wanting what you cant have and wanting what you shouldnt want. and I shouldnt want you.
All night I've watched you sleeping, watched the moonlight come and go, casting it's shadows across your face in black and white. I've never seen anything more beautiful. I think of the life we could have had if things were different, a life where this night is not a singular event, separate from everything else that's real, but every night. But things aren't different, and I cant look at you without feeling like ive tricked you into loving me.
The truth no one is willing to say out loud is that no one has a shot against Valentine but me. I can get close to him like no one else can. I can pretend I want to join him and hell believe me, up until that last moment where I end it all, one way or another. I have something of Sebastians; I can track him to where my fathers hiding, and thats what im going to do. So I lied to you last night. I said I just wanted one night with you. But i want every night with you. And thats why I have to slip out of your window now, like a coward. Because if I had to tell you this to your face, I couldnt make myself go.

I dont blame you if you hate me, I wish you would. As long as I can stil dream, I will dream of you

Review: Low Red Moon - Ivy Devlin

3/5

This was a pretty short and fast paced book, and I never really started to enjoy it until about 3/4's of the way through it.

When you pick it up right away you think werewolf book, but it actually isn't. Yes there are werewolves involved in the plot, but not as a main character. It is in fact a bit of a murder mystery book.

I did enjoy this, as at first I thought it was going to be a typical YA wolf book, so right away I was pleasantly surprised. For me, the story line wasn't all the great and it was difficult to keep reading it, which I think was mostly due to the font used within the book, and the fact that every time the word 'moon' is used it's printed in red ink. That annoyed me, yes it may look pretty, but it makes the book difficult and annoying to read.

I started to really get into the book with about 70 pages to go, and couldn't put it down. Disappointing ending, which you can see coming from a mile off to be honest. Maybe I am too old for this book, as I think it would suit a much younger audience.

Review: Keys to the Repository - Melissa de la Cruz

3/5

This is not a book in the Blue Blood series, but instead has little snippets of information and short stories about some of characters in the Blue Bloods series.

While it was fun to flick through, there was only a few parts of the book I actually found interesting.

Review: Cinderella Ninja Warrior - Maurenn McGowan

4/5

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book to review.

Just like Sleeping Beauty Vampire Slayer, this is another choose your own path kind of book. I know I've said this before, but I love these type of books!

This book follows the typical story of Cinderella, but with a twist! Cinderella's mother was a powerful witch, and Cinderella has been practising hard at both magic and ninja skills, when she gets the chance to enter the magic competition it seems like all her dreams have came true.

I really liked this book, and I hope that Maureen McGowan releases more of these choose your own path books!

Review: Switched (Trylle Trilogy #1) - Amanda Hocking

5/5

Having previously read the My Blood Approves series by Amanda Hocking, I really wanted to start this series as well, and I can safely say it did not disappoint!

This book centres around Wendy, who has never really felt like she fits in anywhere, even her own mother tried to kill her on her 6th birthday!
At school, Wendy meets Finn and at first thinks he is some kind of creepy stalker. As it turns out he is a tracker, and has been sent to find Wendy to bring her home.

Turns out Wendy is part of the Trylle tribe, trolls to be precise. Not only that, she is the princess of the Trylle's, and their future leader. As if that wasn't a big enough shock to Wendy, she has to learn how to be a princess, how to dress, how to act, how to rule, none of which she is remotely interested in!

The book left me wanting to start the second book in the series, I have a massive to be read pile at the moment so it will be some time before I get around to reading the rest of the series though.

Review: The Messenger (The Giver #3) - Lois Lowry

4/5

This is the second book in the companion series to The Giver by Louis Lowry.

This book picks up a few years after Gathering Blue, and this time instead of Kira being the main character, it is Matty's story we are told instead.

Matty is now safe in Village, and living with the Seer. He has a happy life, he has his friends, school and is hoping to be named as Messenger when he is old enough, as he visits nearby villages delivering messages.
The forest has always been his friend, and allowed him to travel through its paths time after time, but Matty's world is turned upside down when one day the forest starts to change. People are brought back dead from the forest and Matty knows the time has come to make his last journey through the village, to bring his old friend Kira back to Village.

Review: Gathering Blue (The Giver #2) - Lois Lowry

3/5

This is a companion book the The Giver, also by Lowis Lowry.

I was a bit annoyed at first because I thought this book would at least mention the characters from The Giver, but no it is set in a totally different world.

Although after a while I started to really enjoy the book, it is similar in a way to The Giver, Kira is an orphan girl with a bad leg and she needs a stick to help her walk. In her village, she should have been left to die at birth because of her leg, but her mother convinced the village to let her live and that she would be useful. Now her mothers dead and the women of the village are ganging up against her, they want the land her mothers home was built on.

I don't want to give too much away, but I really loved the ending of this book, and highly recommend it!
