Review: Matched (Matched #1) - Ally Condie

4/5

Since i'm having a love affair with dystopian books at the moment, i had to pick this up from the library when i saw it!

It is a nice story centred around a 17 year old girl called Cassia. In her world when you turn 17 you get matched, which is when you find out who you are to marry when you turn 21. At first Cassia is happy because she has been matched with her best friend, which is a very rare occurrence in her world, you generally get matched with someone from another city you have never met before.

But when certain things don't seem to add up and Cassia starts to learn that maybe she wasn't matched to the right person, her world starts to turn upside down.

All this happens in a world where you are only allowed to live till your 80, and on your 80th birthday you are fed poison to ensure you die. No one knows how to write anymore, people can only use a keyboard to type. Meals are all prepared especially for your needs and delivered to your door, and you have to carry around 3 strange little pills all the time, and no one knows what the red one will do if you are told to take it.

I really enjoyed this book, some things in it did remind me of other dystopian books, for example being fed poison on your 80th birthday reminds me of the euthanasia of the elderly in The Giver. All the secrets, and desperation for a better life, where you can decide who you want to love, what you want to do, and what you want to read.

I want to read the second book in this series, but it will not be out till November, which is a bit annoying.
