The Declaration is set in the UK in the future. A future where resources are scarce and people live forever, thanks to the wonder drug Longevity. In order to be eligible to take Longevity, people have to sign the Declaration, stating they will never have any children...although there are some who have broken the rules. These children are called Surpluses, they are seen as a drain on precious resources and they need to work in order to replay their debt to society, and atone for the sins of their parents. Anna is one of these children, having spent most of her life in Grange Hall, she is destined to be a Valuable Asset and is hoping to gain employment as a housekeeper. Her life is turned upside down when a new Surplus, Peter arrives at Grange Hall, he has been living on the outside as an illegal for too many years. He has wild ideas about the Authorities, Surpluses and the wonder drug Longevity, he challenges everything being taught to the Surpluses at Grange Hall and also claims to know Anna's parents!
I thought this was a great book, really made you stop and think about how the world truly works! Very realistic and believable.
